8/22/07 Desk Crit by Ted

The bridges seem out of scale, too large.

You might be ignoring the neighbors with the circle bridge.

From a pure geometric form, the circle seems to be ignoring the church and library neighbors, you are turning your back toward them. A square bridge would invite the neighbors.

Ted does like the circle as a shape.

The coffee area/billboard is a good urban move.

The park portion of the bridge may need to be narrower and as you proceed to the building across the bridge, the bridge become even narrower.

Ted thought to make the bridge work better, you should get rid of the street entrance and only have a bridge entrance. That’s not practical, but for academics, you should look at doing it. Another thought with the bridge is to take one bridge to the 3rd floor for a different experience than the 2nd floor bridge.

The cables worry Ted, the bridge line could be made eloquent.

Ted noted:

The thesis statement can/should be refined along the way.

Think more about the word “connect” in you thesis

It may be a Global Connection

Maybe the bridge moves to the corner

Be careful comparing pieces of your building with similar pieces on other buildings.

Orange color may look good in one use, but may be awful in another use.

The roof cables on the roof reinforce the scheme.

Final Review comments from Intensive week

• Why a bridge and why is it placed where you placed it?
• There is a lot of talk about connection in a place where I (Enno) already feel connection exists.
o Don’t rely on bridges as much, there are other ways of connecting.
• What makes this place special for Apple?
• Excited about what you have found at this site.
o You always have to wait at this intersection
o Tie bridges into urbanism stronger – a true extension of urbanism.
• Separating the cars and pedestrians is old fashioned and is a problem in this project which needs to be resolved.
• Bridges aren’t successful yet.
• Your project should be presented more about gathering rather than connection.
• You paid special attention to the corner
• Bridges don’t show gathering, they separate
• Observation deck at ground level – looking is gathering

It sounds so much better when you say it - almost musical.
