Gus,

Pushing your diagram to the 3d realm gives it a bit more authority, or makes it beleivable on another level. The reference to Mondrian's paintings is a nice touch. His broadway boogie woogie was an attempt to capture the essence of the famous bustling NY street. As a result there is some sense of timeliness about his painting. The use of text on your flat diagrams is clear enough. I was thinking they could become the actual lines and not be connected by drawing lines between them. One of the things Ed Tufte talks about is managing graphic information in a way that allows the graphic to tell the whole story and not be augmented by additional graphics. In your case, the lines and borders are superfluous. The space around the words would be enough and the lines as indicated above.

The 3d version of this might be connected from event to event and not soley around a single axis. Are there inherent links from one layer to the next that are not required to pass along the length of the flat panel, down the axis and back over to a location on the next flat panel?
